Are you a Friend of the Rising Sun Branch Library? Do you know that without
the Friends it’s conceivable our library could still be meeting in the old
360 square foot library that was part of the old town hall? It was through
the main efforts of the Friends that the then County Commissioners agreed to
support the library you are now using. After raising over $50,000 to provide
many of the initial computers, copier, books, videos, desks, chairs and
other items too numerous to mention the library opened in November 1994.
Even today the Friends continue to hold book,
bake and yard sales to raise funds to provide your library with items not
provided in the libraries annual budget. The annual membership drive
comprises the largest portion of our fundraisers. Through the Friends
membership dues we can expand the services and materials provided by the
Cecil County Public Library System.
This year will see some changes in the library
and enhancements in the service. The library is receiving new computers to
enable more patrons to make use of the resources available on-line. The
Friends are providing the funds for six computer stations. In order to
accommodate the added computers, the Friends have funded double face
audio/visual shelving and display shelving.
The following is just a portion of the many
(and some rare) items donated to the library by the Friends or it’s
membership:
(1) The complete set of the Rising Sun
Herald in yearly bound volumes since it’s first issue on 25 October
1989.
(2) An almost complete set of the Rising Sun
High School Year Books.
(3) Many Cecil County (and other) Historical
books.
(4) Thousands of Civil War Scenes Photographed
1861- 65 with Text by many Special Authorities. A 10 volume Semi-Centennial
Memorial published in 1911. Dr. Neil Taylor donated this rare collection.
Ask the librarian to look at any of these volumes, which cannot be taken
from the library.
October is membership month and we urge our
many friends who are not members of the Friends to join us at our annual
meeting on 17 October 2005 at 8 PM in the library meeting room, or ask the
librarian for a membership folder.
