FRIENDS OF
THE RISING SUN LIBRARY
MINUTES
April 10,
2006
The meeting was
called to order on Monday, April 10, 2006 at 8:00 p.m. Those present were
Helena Schulz, Fred Bergold, Marilyn O’Connell, Virginia Tennis, Mitzi
Fields, Phyllis Willerton, Jerry Newman and Donna Hayes.
The minutes of the January 9, 2006 meeting were
approved as written.
The Treasurer’s Report showed a balance in all accounts
as of March 31, 2006 of $15,728.64. Motion was made and accepted to accept
the report.
Correspondence
Marilyn thanked Helena for sending such a nice card to
Bessie Graham while she was in Calvert Manor. Bessie greatly appreciated
receiving the card.
Unfinished Business
Preparation for Sun Fest
The shed is too full to hold items for the upcoming
yard sale. We can advertise and invite people to bring yard sale items to
the library the week before Sun Fest. Since we’re limited on space and
time, we need to tactfully ask for good quality items. One suggestion was
to write a letter to the editor soliciting items. Marilyn offered to do
this. The consensus of opinion was to not accept clothing for the Yard
Sale. Very little money has been brought in the last few sales.
Marilyn passed around a donation acknowledgement which
was approved by Denise Davis. We can give these to anyone donating items
for the Yard Sale.
Marilyn asked for someone to head the Yard Sale
Committee. Ginny Tennis volunteered. Ginny will contact Jean Hoots who has
helped with the Yard Sale for several years. Phyllis Willerton will also
serve on this committee.
Marilyn also asked someone to volunteer for the
Publicity Committee. Donna volunteered. They will need to make flyers to
advertise the sale; send info to local newspapers and radio and have it put
on the library website.
Jerry offered to make sandwich boards to put out at Sun
Fest and at the end of Colonial Way. We will also need to solicit baked
goods and help for the day of the Sale. Phyllis offered to ask her son’s
Scout Troop to move books from the shed a day or two before the sale. She
will also contact the Guidance Office at Rising Sun High School to ask if
any students need community hours
Fred suggested asking a business to donate the use of a
dumpster so that junk donations could be thrown away. Jerry has a pick-up
truck and said he could haul the trash away.
Mitzi said the new Children’s Librarians will go to Sun
Fest to represent the Library.
New Business
Mitzi suggested purchasing a ceiling mounted projector
for the computer classes here. Cost ranges from $1500 to $2000. Karen
Peterman is now trained and will be doing classes here.
Another suggestion from Carol was to purchase a nice
display unit to market the book collection. It would go where the cube is
now located. The approximate cost is $3000.
Helena suggested purchasing the projector for now and
wait until we can see examples of the display unit.
Mitzi will talk to Cathay and get more information
about the projector. That item will be on the agenda for the July meeting.
Jerry talked about the bound copies of the Herald.
They are now kept in the Quiet Room cabinets. The library is running out
of room to store them. They are very good for historical purposes but is
binding them the best way to keep them.
Marilyn said she will not be president next year. A
committee for nominations will need to be formed. She also asked if e-mail
worked for sending the agenda and minutes to everyone. Everyone present
agreed it worked well.
There being no further business the meeting adjourned
at 9 p.m.
Jerry did put in a plug for the dance being sponsored
by the Rising Sun Historical Commission. It will be May 5th at
the Fire Hall.
