Friends of the Rising Sun Library Minutes
January 9, 2006
The meeting was called to
order at 8PM by President Marilyn O’Connell. The
following members were in attendance: Marilyn O’Connell, Jerry Newman,
Ron Jagger, Tony Mattern, Helena Schulz, Mitzi Fields and Barbara Dickson.
The minutes of the
October 17, 2005 were read, corrected and approved.
The Treasurer’s report
was presented showing $586.22 in checking, $4,976.32
in savings and the certificate of deposit of $10,000 for a total of
$15,562.54.
$10,000 was transferred from savings to checking to pay for the desks and
shelving which bill was $10,151.76. Marilyn said she was very pleased
with
the membership income of $2866.00 which is significant and may be
attributed in part to the article in the RS Herald. Jerry moved and Tony
seconded the motion to accept the report.
There was no
correspondence and there were no committee reports. Marilyn
posted the Christmas card received from the Friends of the Elkton library.
Unfinished business:
The shelving and desks
arrived and were mostly installed. Mitzi reported a
problem with installing some of the pieces which had been backordered and
were too large when received Paula, the designer, is working with the
vendor for
correction. The workstations look very nice and Mitzi said they are often
full with
people waiting for them. We discussed the people who use the computers
and Tony
said a survey at school indicated that 81% of the surveyed students have
internet
access but still the desks and computers are mostly in use. Jerry will
ask Lisa from
the Herald to come out for an article on the new desks and Mitzi will ask
Cathay Crosby
to do some digital pictures which can be included on the webpage. Mitzi
said the
shelving has loosened up the crowding in the children’s section and helped
make room
for a plan for a teen section.
Thanks to Jerry Newman
for the menu board work which looks really nice and to Ron
Jagger who painted the book drop and is going back for more!
The furnace, which was
only 10 years old, has been replaced but since the weather has
been so mild has not been used.
New Business:
We discussed emailing
future meeting notices since all but one member has email. Marilyn
will send two notices one about 1 week before the meeting and a tickler
the day of the
meeting. Vicki will still receive mail notices. This will help save time
and stamps.
Mitzi said there is a
lull on needs most of which have been met but the library staff is
thinking! There will probably be no book sale before Sunfest. The book
sale on Sunfest day
will be at the library instead of in town to avoid carting books back and
forth but we will
discuss the idea of a sandwich sign at the table in town reminding people
of the sale going on
at the library.
Mitzi said Bessie Graham
has suffered a small stroke and is at Calvert Nursing Home.
Helena will send a card from the group.
There being no further
business Jerry motioned and Ron seconded the motion to adjourn.
Respectfully,
Barbara Dickson, Secretary
