Vicki Truitt and Lisa
Stenta, mothers of two young dancers, became frustrated with the lack of
quality supplies for dancewear in the area and decided they could do
something about it. Both had business backgrounds, Vicki in retailing and
Lisa in office management. Together, they began planning to open a
business called, The Dance Station and found a convenient location on the
corner of Main and Bow in downtown Elkton within walking distance of the
Cecil Community College’s Elkton Station, where dance is taught. Their
timing was perfect because Elkton had recently received an “arts and
entertainment designation” from the state of Maryland. Their store with
dancing shoes, costumes, tights, dance bags, is a welcome addition to
Elkton’s new focus on the arts.
“Finally,
the dancers in our area no longer
have to travel far for dancewear and
shoes."
Vicki and Lisa came to
the SBIC at the library with a business plan already developed. They just
wanted to have it reviewed before going for a loan. In addition to just
needing some affirmation about their business plan, they welcomed
suggestions about marketing and networking with other business resources.
Customer service is a premium goal, says Vicki, “If we don’t have an
item, we will be happy to try and get it for you”. As an indication of
being available for customers, the Dance Studio has evening hours until 7:00
PM, Monday thru Friday. Their store hours are 12:00 – 7:00 PM, Monday to
Friday, and 9:00 – 3:00 PM on Saturdays. Vicki and Lisa anticipate working
with local dance studios and arts and entertainment groups to promote the
performing arts in our area. They have a community bulletin board in the
studio and issue a newsletter to interested parties. Some of their product
lines are listed on their website. |
