Success Story
HORIZON
PHOTOGRAPHY WORKSHOPS

Steve Gottlieb was
already a nationally recognized photographer when he called the SBIC and
SCORE to ask for help in establishing a new and related business: a
photography workshop. The name for his new business was Horizon Photography
Workshops. He chose Chesapeake City, Maryland for his business site because
of its proximity to several metropolitan areas from which he could draw
students and teachers. While he knew the commercial photography business, he
needed help because both his business and his location were totally new. We
worked with him to define his target markets, identify publications that
would reach those potential clients, identify organizations that would have
potential clients as members, and establish local contacts. Those contacts
successfully lead to a series of interviews, presentations, and locations
near Chesapeake City
where he could hold some of his classes. Steve has expressed his thanks to
SBIC and SCORE not only for their concrete help but for their moral support,
which is very important when starting a business in a new location.

The press has taken
quick note of Steve’s venture. A cover story in the Cecil Business Ledger
helped get things started. Since then, his press coverage has expanded with
stories in: The News Journal, (2/15/2005);
The Mariner (5/13/2005),
and USA Today 5/6/2005),
which featured Horizon in a cover story for its “Destinations and
Diversions” section.
Steve is an author of
several photographic books: American Icons, Abandoned America,
and Washington: Portrait of a City. These beautiful books are
available at the Cecil County Public Library.
