Pam Conklin and P.J.'s Casual Cuts, Elkton, Maryland
Taking advantage of an
opportunity that presents itself is the route to becoming
business owners for some people, like Pam Conklin and her partner, Jessica
Stauffer. Pam and Jessica are now co-owners of PJ’s Casual Cuts on Bridge
Street. Both were working in this same beauty salon under the previous
manager when they were offered an opportunity to buy it. Pam became the
“legwoman” of this duo, seeking out all the information about licensing,
financing, and planning, necessary to own the business.
Pam successfully
utilized many of the business resources Cecil County offers to finalize this
opportunity. She worked with our SBIC and the SBDC to develop her business
plan and seek financing. She approached two local banks for financing, but
was not happy with their terms. So, she turned to an “angel” who financed
their purchase of the business. In business, an angel is a private
investor who is willing to fund new business ventures. This could be a
family member, a friend, or some member of the investment community that
belongs to an angel network.
