Friends of the Library

Friends Logo Contest

Few members realize that the Friends do not have their own logo. The one we use belonged to the library back in the 50's & 60's.

So, we've decided to conduct a contest for the design of a new official logo. The contest will be open to solo artists, art students, and graphic designers. A small honorarium or stipend will be presented for the design chosen.

Entries are accepted from June 15 through September 1.

The design chosen will be announced on Saturday October 9, 2010 as part of the Annual Book Swap Event.

Click here for full contest rules.  Good luck to all who enter!

Who Are the Friends of the Library?

Great public libraries need great friends! The Friends of the Cecil County Public Library support our county's public libraries by supporting the Board of Trustees, by raising funds for the entire library sytem and every branch, by advocating for public funding for our libraries, and by promoting use of the library.

The Friends of the Cecil County Public Library is a non-profit membership group dedicated to promoting Cecil County's library system, which is an essential institution in our community. Our volunteer members advocate, educate, and raise funds on behalf of the Library, its patrons, and the larger community. The Friends raise funds to be used by The Cecil County Public Library for activities not ordinarily covered under the Library's operating budget.

How Do Friends Help the Library?

As advocates for public library support, we let our County Commissioners and state elected leaders know how important public libraries are in our county. As members, we show our support by writing letters and e-mails, speaking to them personally, and just by joining. With many members, we can show strong support for our librarires.

How Are Funds Raised?

The Friends raise funds through annual membership dues of people who love their libraries (like you) and donations, through special fund raising campaigns such as our Business Benefactors Campaign, and through a variety of special activities such as sales and raffles.

How Do the Friends Serve the Cecil County Public Library?

Because we have a countywide public library system, we are dedicated to being Friends to the entire system and to every branch. We provide funding for programs and book discussions for children, young adults and adults throughout the system. We also provide funding to help purchase special books or encyclopedias, equipment and furniture. Some examples are:

  • Children's Summer Reading Program
  • Young Adult Summer Reading Program
  • Adult Book Discussion Groups
  • Special Adult Programs
  • The Annual Volunteer Luncheon
  • The Annotated Code of Maryland, purchased for two branches
  • The McGraw Hill Encyclopedia of Science and Technology, purchased for the central branch
  • The Friends also made a major contribution toward the purchase of the new Cecil County Public Library Bookmobile
