Home of the Brave

Recently, President Obama officially declared November “Military Family Month,” honoring the sacrifices and contributions made by the brave family members and loved ones of our service men and women.  You can check out the president’s entire proclamation here.

In his address, President Obama also called for us all to “reaffirm our commitments to these selfless individuals who exemplify the highest principles of our Nation.”  We here at CCPL heard the message loud and clear.  And so, this Friday, November 12th, we’re excited to launch a new collection of resources for military families at the Perryville Branch Library.  The collection includes essential resources for adults, children, and teens in a variety of formats, from DVDs to children’s learning resource kits, all with the aim of connecting the members of military families with the materials they need to handle the challenges of deployment, separation, reunion, and the many other situations they so courageously face each day.

Here are some examples of what you’ll find in the collection:

For children, we offer everything from picture books like Mommy, You’re My Hero! and While You Are Away to helpful DVDs such as Mr. Poe & Friends Discuss Family Reunion After Deployment.  A special learning resource kit for military families based on the classic children’s story The Kissing Hand is also available.

For caregivers and spouses, there’s the U.S. Army’s Deployment Cycle Readiness:  Soldier’s and Family Member’s Handbook, as well as the guide, Life as a Military Spouse.  Many free pamphlets, guides, book lists, and resource guides are available as well.  We’ve only just begun to build this collection for you, and as we go forward, we welcome your input and suggestions on the resources you and your family need. This Friday, November 12th at 11am, we’ll be holding a special ceremony at the Perryville Branch Library to unveil this collection and honor our local military families, as well as our veterans.  Live music, activities for children, and light refreshments will be on hand.  Please join us at the library as we celebrate these members of our community who inspire us every day with their courage, resilience, and commitment to their families and country.
