It’s that time of year once again: the new school year.
Few phrases in the English language evoke such varied and passionate responses as “back to school”. Some students will simply give a sad little shake of their head, while others will yell out, “No Way!” A few will bravely admit that boredom has overtaken what they once looked forward to as the endless days of summer.
The same varied responses can be found when asking parents their feelings on the subject. You will find some parents gleefully humming along to the school supply commercials that celebrate the season as the “most wonderful time of the year.” However, other parents prefer the unscheduled days on the calendar to those filled with early morning alarms, homework, and sports practices. It seems that when it comes to this unofficial 5th season of the year, the “back to school” season, you either love it or you hate it.
I won’t lie to you…I love it! I have always looked forward to the return to school with just as much gusto as I looked forward to the start of summer. As a child, my favorite back to school memories centered on the fun of shopping for new clothes and the excitement of reuniting with my friends. Now, as a parent, I look forward to this time of year more than ever; I find that it brings a welcome return to normalcy, a return to order from the chaos of the summer. Heading back to school is similar to ringing in the New Year each January 1st. It represents a new slate, a blank slate on which all things are possible. A new school year can offer a chance for redemption, a gateway to new beginnings, and endless opportunities to do all the things you meant to do last year.
All that said, whether you love it or hate it, you can’t stop back to school from coming. And, lucky for you, the Cecil County Public Library is here to help. Whether you are faced with puzzling homework assignments, challenging book reports, or demanding science fair projects, the librarians at all of the local branches are waiting eagerly to assist you. No question is too big or too silly. Just stop in and take advantage of all the services that the library has to offer, and let us help to make your transition to the back to school season as easy as possible.
So, where do you stand? Are you singing the back to school blues or are you doing a happy dance? Please share your thoughts and your memories of going back to school!
