Our New Video Game Collection

Cecil County Public Library Video Game CollectionGuess what we got for Christmas!

Yes, we (two almost elderly adults) added Xbox Kinect to things that hang off our TV!  What are we doing with Xbox?   Well, we’re hoping to attract the grandkids for one thing.  And we’re hoping to exercise both our aging brains and bodies playing educational and physical games for another.  And of course the thrill of virtually shooting evil bad guys from the security of the living room ranks right up there.

But the best news of all is that I can borrow games for free from Cecil County Public Library.  The library now offers Xbox, Kinect and Wii games to be borrowed just like books.  They check out to adults 18 and over for 7 days, two at a time.  All it takes is a Cecil County Public Library Card in good standing (free to residents) and an easy 3 step process:

1.     Browse the collections online or see browsing guides found in each library and select the games you would like to borrow.

2.    Place hold requests on the games you want and the library will call you when it’s your turn.   Ask the staff for help if you need it.

3.    Pick up the game at your local branch and play away for 7 days.  After that there’s a charge of $1 per day (max fine is $5).

So extend your video gaming experience and try new things in the New Year.  Visit your library!

Audiobooks Make Everything Better

42-16471757I’m a mom and I work full-time, so I’m usually scrambling to get too much done in too little time. Always multitasking is said to be bad for the brain, but it’s how I function: folding laundry while watching TV, helping kids with homework while cooking dinner, scraping yet another mystery stain from my good work sweater while attempting to pay a few bills… you get the idea.

My latest discovery, and it’s an indulgent one, is the audiobook. Although I love reading, I rarely get time to sit down and do it. But with my iPod in tow, that long car ride or even the jog to stave off holiday poundage becomes an enjoyable excuse to slip into a great book – by listening.

Cecil County Public Library just launched an even easier way to get audiobooks, for free, from the convenience of your own home. OneClick Digital provides a great selection of downloadable audiobooks, most of which are always available (no holds necessary!) Grab your library card, create an account, and you’re set to start browsing. Will listening to an audiobook make all dreaded tasks fun? Probably not, but it certainly makes them more enjoyable. So, excuse me as I turn on my audiobook, take a deep breath, and decide which items to tackle next on my to-do list…

What’s your multitasking secret?
