Privacy and eBook Access through Adobe Digital Editions 4

CCPL has recently learned that Adobe Digital Editions 4 has a software vulnerability that affects user privacy. Some library patrons use Adobe Digital Editions 4 to access eBooks through OverDrive -- the problem is that Adobe Digital Editions 4 has been logging data on the books used with this program and other ebooks that have already been downloaded on the computers of library users. This information is being uploaded in plain text to Adobe servers, and is being sent without any encryption, meaning that book logging data is potentially open to interception. Please note that this vulnerability seems to be limited to Adobe Digital Editions 4, the most recent version of the software. As far as we currently know, Adobe Digital Editions 2 and 3 are unaffected. OverDrive's apps are also not affected. Not sure if you're using Adobe Digital Editions 4? Find out by opening Adobe Digital Editions on your computer, then clicking "Help" and "About Digital Editions."

Adobe has said that they are working on a fix to come out October 20th. If you are concerned about your privacy, we recommend that you uninstall Adobe Digital Editions 4 from your computer. You can still read OverDrive eBooks through OverDrive Read (which is browser-based), as well as through OverDrive's apps. Another option is to install Adobe Digital Editions 3.0.

CCPL values our users' right to privacy and we are following the situation closely. We are also working with the MD Digital eLibrary Consortium to advocate on behalf of our patrons.
