Cutting for Stone (CD BOOK)

Abraham Verghese

This is a well told and engrossing family saga about medical missionaries set in Ethiopia and the United States.  Twins are born at the mission clinic in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.  The father is a gifted British surgeon.  The mother is an Indian nun.  This is the twins' story of growing up abandoned and orphaned, yet sheltered in their mission environment--until politics intervene.  It's an exciting plot that gives the listener insight into the modern history of Ethiopia, twinness, and the work of physicians and medical missionaries.  The listener experiences the twins' psycho-drama as they come of age and discover and reconcile their family's history.  Seamless dramatic narration of a story of conflict and rivalry between brothers; jealous love and exile makes this the audio equivalent of a "page turner".  Lee O'Brien
