Connie is an overstressed, overachieving Harvard grad student desperate for a great dissertation topic. She is just about to begin researching when family life intervenes - Connie's loopy, new-age mother persuades her to dejunk her grandmother's house so she can sell it. While digging through dusty antiques, Connie stumbles across a clue to the identity of a previously unknown Salem witch, Deliverance Dane. As a Colonial History major, Connie can't resist and becomes obsessed with finding out more. The book flits back and forth between Connie's modern life and the colonial life of Deliverance. Both characters' lives unravel like mysteries, and both open up to reveal their feelings about family, love, magic and spirituality. An interesting historical fiction read for those that enjoy a little magical realism.
