The best reads are those that you just don't want to end. So, when I got to the end of this book and realized it was an established series with many more books, I was ecstatic! Listed primarily as mysteries, the Aunt Dimity books go far beyond such simple classification: they combine elements of magical realism, fairy-tale whimsy, adventure and humor similar to Jasper Fforde or Harry Potter. Whereas many gentle mysteries can be formulaic or fluffy, these books are witty, unexpected, and exceptionally well-written with complex and satisfying plots. In fact, traditional mystery readers may be surprised at how the author never throws the "mystery" in your face; rather, many mysterious elements appear, disappear, twist, turn and then resolve in lovely ways the reader would not have predicted. You quickly fall in love with the characters and the scenes are so well described that you feel transported. I would recommend this book highly to readers who love cozy mysteries, but also to fiction readers looking for a refreshing and fun read.
