The 19th Wife

David Ebershoff.

In The 19th Wife by David Ebershorff, you will find two intertwined stories, one historical fiction, the other a modern day murder-mystery, which by a common thread come together at the end of the book. The first story is about the beginnings of the Mormon church, the story of Ann Eliza Young, the 19th wife of Brigham Young, Prophet, and her crusade to end polygamy. The second story is about a young man, Jordan Scott, turned out on the streets at a very young age with no money, no place to live, and no skills. Jordan was a member of the First of the Latter Day Saints, a break-off from the Mormon church when polygamy was outlawed in the late 19th century. Jordan is trying to get his mother, the 19th wife of his father, out of jail for a crime she did not commit-murdering her husband.

I really enjoyed the book, but I thought that the transitions between the two storylines were really abrupt. Just when I was getting back into the groove of one storyline, the perspective would change! I wish Mr. Ebershoff had just stuck to the story about Ann Eliza Young.
