Tessa is forced to leave her home in America to find her wayward brother in Victorian England. When she arrives, she quickly finds herself wrapped up in a world where monsters exist, and she could be one of them. This is the first in a trilogy prequel series to Clare's wildly popular Mortal Instruments series and now that I've begun reading City of Fallen Angels (the fourth installment of the Mortal Instruments series), I can see how it would be difficult to follow the storylines without starting with her first book, City of Bones. The series are definitely separate from one another, but there are recurring characters and it helps to be familiar with the world when beginning The Clockwork Angel. Clare mentions on her website that the books can be read in the order in which she releases them, but that nothing in either series is a spoiler for the other series.

Confused? Don't let that stop you! These series have it all! While the books could be considered paranormal romance, they're also action-packed. With heart-stopping, horrifying moments and plenty of unexpected twists, these books are a must read!
