Every Last One: A Novel
What would you do if the life you have been living in the ordinary day-to-day of it all was suddenly gone? What if your own actions or inactions could be blamed in 20/20 hindsight? How would you go on? Could you go on? These are some of the painful questions that as readers we must contend with while making our way through Anna Quindlen's latest novel Every Last One. This book takes us into the lives of the Lathams, a typical family of five with all their plans and flaws, and asks us as readers to question the relationships we have with all those we hold dear. The main voice we hear is mom Mary Beth. She seems like the average mother who thinks that life will continue with some predictability...date nights with her husband...sports and other activities with her three children...family squabbles over the dinner table...concerns about her company's future...the list goes familiarly on. What ends up putting us in unfamiliar territory is what happens to the family. Without giving too much away, I would recommend this book. Quindlen seems to have a lot of insight into family dynamics even in trying situations.

This was my first Anna Quindlen novel after many friends suggesting her. I was pleasantly surprised at how she is able to write such a 'simple' book with such depth and complexity. It took a bit to get into it but then I found my breath taken from me as the plot moved along. Almost ready to read another one; need a bit more time to recover from this one's lingering memory.
I just finished this book and absolutely loved it....and was haunted by it. It could be written about any one of us. Reading this beautiful book is like taking a peek into the home of anyone we know. The conversations and interactions are so real and that makes the twists in this book so gut wrenching. You keep telling yourself, "It could happen to me." "It could happen to me."
