The Monstrumologist

edited by Rick Yancey.

Warning: not for the squeamish! Author Richard Yancey receives an interesting journal from his editor that appears to be written in the 1800's. William James Henry writes for the first time about his apprenticeship to manic-depressive (and often crazed), monstrumologist Dr. Warthrop. Following in the footsteps of his father, who died a disgusting death as result of working with Warthop, Will Henry recounts his harrowing experiences. Flushing out, dissecting, and killing ancient monsters called Anthropophagi is at the top of the list, but add this to a world full of sleepless, hungry nights, disease and dirt ridden haunts and men who make your skin crawl and you have an in-depth and horrifyingly fantastic novel. Described by Booklist as a "splattery miasma of blood, bone, pus, and maggots," Yancey really delves deep into gore and horror and continues this into his next novel Wendingo. For the younger reader who enjoys less guts and gore but with just as much quality content, try the Last Apprentice series by Joseph Delaney.

This was a really good book! We read it for Book Hook and the kids were literally "hooked". They said it was the best book we have read so far and can't wait to read "The Curse of the Wendingo"!
