Assassin's Apprentice
Fitz, the six year old bastard son of Prince Chivalry, is left at the royal castle, and placed under the care of Burrich, who cares for the prince's animals. As Fitz learns that he can meld his mind with animals and has the ability to learn the Skill to get into other people's minds, he is noticed by the King, who orders him to be trained secretly as an assassin. This book is the first of the Farseer Trilogy and a wonderful introduction to the genre of Fantasy. The magical abilities, the castle life, and the conflicts with neighboring peoples are fascinating, as are the well-developed characters. When you finish this book, you will want to immediately grab the next in the series, The Royal Assassin.

This was a great series to read! I had so much fun I was a little sad when I finished the third book. Thanks for the recommendation!
