The Reversal: A Novel
In The Reversal, author Michael Connelly provides a twist on the Law and Order theme when attorney Mickey Haller and investigator Harry Bosch team up to retry a 24-year-old case. The defendant, a convicted child murderer, has been granted a new trial based upon DNA evidence. Because the DA's office can't try the case, defense attorney Haller is tapped to represent the prosecution. Haller solicits the help of his ex-wife, Maggie McPherson, as second chair and convinces Bosch to join the team as investigator.
The Reversal offers the best of two worlds. Bosch searches for new evidence and faces the perils that such an investigation incurs. While that suspense builds, Haller squares off in the courtroom with a formidable opponent in Clive ‘The Barrister' Royce. Furthering the tension, the defendant is free and is exhibiting signs that he may be contemplating a return to crime.
Connelly knows how to tell a story and how to keep you guessing, waiting for the other shoe to drop. And when it does, it falls with a thud that is so unanticipated that the reader is left breathless. If you are a fan of legal thrillers, you will read The Reversal with enthusiasm and be sorry to see it end.
