City of Ember

This post-apocalyptic story is set in the dim and dying underground city of Ember, which was founded and stocked with supplies 241 years ago by "The Builders" to save humanity.  There is no sun, no moon, nothing but electric light. . . and in the Unknown Regions beyond, nothing but darkness. Now the city is crumbling--desperately short of food, clothes, and especially electricity to keep the town illuminated.  Corrupt and secretive government officials deny problems, despite frequent and lengthening blackouts.  Convinced that an exit door exists, determined twelve-year-olds Lina and Doon follow long-hidden, cryptic instructions that send them on a dark and harrowing journey toward a brighter world.  The cliff-hanger ending will leave readers hungry for the next Book of Ember.
