When I listened to the audiobook of Alice I Have Been by Melanie Benjamin, I wanted a fairy tale to come true for Alice Liddell, the Alice for which Lewis Caroll wrote Alice in Wonderland. Alice Liddell recounts the stories of her youth with her sisters and Mr. Dodgson (Lewis Caroll) and growing up at Christ Church, Oxford. She also tells of her young romance with Prince Leopold, the youngest of Queen Victoria's sons.
I have an interest in Victorian England and the history of photography, so I was immediately hooked. Fans of historical fiction and literary fiction will enjoy the cast of characters in this novel complete with family drama, romance, a coming of age story and the question of scandal.
