The Monsters of Templeton
I first listened to this book back in 2009, but my baseball-obsessed husband recently checked it out and was listening to it on a recent trip up to New York State. He asked me "Why did you not tell me about this book? It's set in Cooperstown." Is it? It is set in the fictional town of Templeton, complete with a baseball museum, monsters, hidden secrets and famous writers. It centers around Willie Upton, who upon returning home from an archeology dig gone wrong, learns that a huge monster has been found floating in the lake. She also learns from her mother that her father isn't who she thought he was... but that's her own monster to unravel.
A fantastic book for readers who enjoy historical fiction and magical realism.

I read this book several years ago and truly loved it! Because it bounces between time periods, it satified my love of historical fiction. I thought it was clever that the characters from the colonial period were based on people that we would know, although the names were changed. Willie's story set in "our" time, was also captivating. I have wanted to visit Cooperstown, NY every since I read this, not only to see the Baseball Museum, but to visit the beautiful, quaint town that is described in the book.
