Poe is from Los Angeles, where she's the singer in a punk band. When her doctor mother heads off to South America to help save the world, Poe is sent to live with the father she never knew in the boring, cookie-cutter town of Benders Hollow. Not only is her father as strait-laced and dull as the town he lives in, he's also the guidance counselor at her new high school. Joy.
There are two black sheep in the bleating herd at Benders High though, Theo and Velveeta. Theo is an anarchist who happens to be the mayor's son. Velveeta is her next door neighbor and a "born victim," the target of school bullies, mainly football god Colby Chase.
Challenging authority is an everyday activity for Poe, but when Velveeta's bullying get brutal, Poe knows this is a fight she has to win. She has to confront all the bullies in Benders Hollow--the students, the parents, the school administration and maybe even herself.
