Emmeline Thisle has been an outcast her entire life. Born with a curled foot, she is labeled as unwanted by everyone except the village cows that seem mysteriously drawn to her. A sudden flood destroys the entire village and sweeps Emmeline away far downstream, where she is rescued by a dairyman's son and taken in by his family. While recovering, Emmeline accidentally discovers that she can magically churn cream into chocolate. No one has been able to make chocolate for years, so word of Emmeline's talent spreads quickly throughout the countryside. As the news spreads, "unwanted" Emmeline becomes the most desired person in the kingdom. Emmeline must decide if there's a way to balance her desires with the needs of her country.
What's not to like about a love story with chocolate? But seriously, there's much more to Suzanne Selfor's The Sweetest Spell than that. It's also a story about prejudice and greed, perseverance and helping others.
