Betty Anne and Kenny Waters had a rough childhood. They grew up with a negligent mother in a small Massachusetts town where they committed petty crimes at a young age. Betty Anne was able to get her life on track, but her brother Kenny never did. When Kenny gets arrested for a brutal murder, he does not take it seriously. His situation becomes all too real when he is convicted for the murder and sentenced to a life in prison without parole. Although he is arrogant and aggressive, his sister knows that Kenny is not really a killer. Betty Anne devotes the next 18 years of her life to freeing her brother from prison.
This true life story chronicles how a mother of two boys goes from not even holding a high school diploma, to obtaining a law degree and helping to set free a man no one else believed in. The brother and sister duo are wonderfully portrayed by two-time Oscar winner Hillary Swank ("Million Dollar Baby"), and Sam Rockwell. Academy award winner Melissa Leo ("The Fighter") also gives an outstanding performance as the police detective who helped to convict Waters.
