If you had to pick just one book to represent the United States, what would it be?
PBS is trying to figure that out. The Great American Read, produced by PBS, is an 8-part television series that “explores and celebrates the power of reading.” After a survey of 7,500 people and the deliberation of literary experts, 100 books were chosen as being the most influential and beloved. The series will talk about the reasons why these books were chosen—what themes or subject matters seem to resonate with Americans, and why. It’s a celebration of books, reading, and readers—and it is interactive! The nation will decide on the winner through voting during the summer.
The 2-hour launch of the series is May 22nd at 8 PM. After the summer of voting, there will be five one-hour episodes starting on September 11, each surrounding a specific theme. On October 23, there will be a live finale where the winners will be announced.
Cecil County Public Library will be joining in! Cast your vote at our Library After Hours event on June 22nd at 6:30 pm at the Elkton Central Library, and learn more about the initiative from a Maryland Public Television representative. Following the presentation, go into the stacks, share your favorites, find new suggestions from our knowledgeable staff, and discuss ideas and opinions with other readers.
