Children's book festivalJoin us for Cecil County Public Library’s first Children’s Book Festival on Saturday, June 9th at North East Community Park from 10am – 2pm.

Regional Authors attending will include JoAnn Dawson, Barbara Lockhart, Kevin McCloskey, John Micklos, Jr., Dianne K. Salerni, Kevin Sherry, David Teague, and Annette Whipple. Attendees can chat with authors about their books and what it’s like to be author. We will have readings by the authors and special guests at the story-stage throughout the event.

Children can visit the CCPL Bookmobile and meet the Ironbirds Mascot Ferrous and Black Stache, a pirate from the upcoming production of Milburn Stone Theatre’s “Peter and the Starcatcher.” In addition to sweet treats and family activities, children and teens will receive a voucher for a free book by one of our attending authors and a summer reading t-shirt, while supplies last.

We spoke with one of our local authors, JoAnn Dawson, who penned the “Lucky Foot Stable” series, which follows friends Mary and Jody on adventures with their ponies, Lady and Gypsy.

She became interested in writing children’s books, “because I had so many great stories in my head from my childhood on the farm, all the adventures I had with my best friend Mary and our horses that I wanted to set them down on paper.  One book turned into a series of five.”

Her favorite children’s book as a child? “The first book I ever read at age 6 was ‘The Bobbsey Twins.’  Later I loved ‘Black Beauty’ by Anna Sewell, and in my teens my favorite book was ‘Christy’ by Catherine Marshall. I also read all of the Marguerite Henry books, starting with ‘Misty of Chincoteague’.  One of the reviews of my book series compared me to her series and I was never more thrilled.” Don’t miss a visit with JoAnn’s pony, Butterscotch.

CCPL’s Summer Reading and Learning Program begins June 1st but there will be a station to register the whole family if you haven’t already done so. Reading all summer long can be a favorite family tradition while helping to prevent summer learning loss. Register online at or stop in to any branch to pick up a reading log!
