Have you heard of “The Great American Read”? It’s a new series by PBS that revolves around the joy and magic of reading. They’ve selected 100 books, and it’s up to the American public to vote on their favorite title.
Which books have your vote? The library wants to hear your answers! Cecil County Public Library is hosting our second Library After Hours next Friday, June 22nd at 6:30 PM at the Elkton Central Library.
A representative from Maryland Public Television will give a short overview of “The Great American Read,” and you’ll hear from staff on which books impacted their lives. After the presentation, interact with staff and other readers, advocate for your favorites, and find new books! Throughout the night, we’ll hold our own informal vote to choose the “Great Cecil County Read.” Be sure to bring your friends if you want a specific title to win! We will announce the top five winners at the end of the evening.

If you had to pick just one book to represent the United States, what would it be?
PBS is trying to figure that out. The Great American Read, produced by PBS, is an 8-part television series that “explores and celebrates the power of reading.” After a survey of 7,500 people and the deliberation of literary experts, 100 books were chosen as being the most influential and beloved. The series will talk about the reasons why these books were chosen—what themes or subject matters seem to resonate with Americans, and why. It’s a celebration of books, reading, and readers—and it is interactive! The nation will decide on the winner through voting during the summer.
The 2-hour launch of the series is May 22nd at 8 PM. After the summer of voting, there will be five one-hour episodes starting on September 11, each surrounding a specific theme. On October 23, there will be a live finale where the winners will be announced.
Cecil County Public Library will be joining in! Cast your vote at our Library After Hours event on June 22nd at 6:30 pm at the Elkton Central Library, and learn more about the initiative from a Maryland Public Television representative. Following the presentation, go into the stacks, share your favorites, find new suggestions from our knowledgeable staff, and discuss ideas and opinions with other readers. For more information or to register, call the Elkton Central Library at 410-996-5600 option 3.
