It is World War II, and families throughout London are sending their children to the country to keep them safe from potential bombings. For nine-year-old Ada, who suffers from a twisted foot, this evacuation means the first time that she will leave her one room apartment. Together with her brother Jamie, Ada flees to the country where she learns about trust, family, and acceptance amidst the devastating backdrop of wartime England.
