For Stella, growing up in Depression-era North Carolina, life has a certain set of rules. Some stores she can enter, and others she cannot; some folks are friendly, and others are downright nasty to her and the other African American families in her community. Living in a segregated town, Stella’s family is shocked when they find that once again, the Klan is organizing in their area. Stella’s family must band together with their friends and neighbors to stand up against this terrible threat to their safety and their livelihood.
