This is a dystopian novel unlike any other, focusing on Candace Chen, a millennial woman living in New York City, who doesn't notice that the world is ending as more and more people fall victim to a disease known as Shen Fever. Severance goes back and forth in time, contrasting Candace's tedious office job with her travels with a group of survivors through post-apocalyptic America. This is a horror story and a biting satire of consumerism and work culture all wrapped up into one terrifying, beautiful package. It's also one of the best debuts I've read this year!

Try Severance if you enjoyed Station Eleven by Emily St. John Mandel or The Idiot by Elif Batuman.
