The book is set in Ireland and follows two characters, Connell and Marianne through high school and university. They are opposites that find themselves being drawn to each other over and over again. This book was unexpectedly amazing. Connell and Marianne have got to be the most sympathetic protagonists in recent memory. They were perfect in their imperfections. This is the best book I've read all year, in years period. Cerebral, insightful, compassionate, sensitive--there was not one false note in this entire book. By the end of the first chapter, you know you're in the hands of a gifted and astute writer. It is a page-turner that you'd rather savor then rush through. I look forward to following Sally Rooney's career.
