Based on a Grimm's fairy tale, The Goose Girl is an enchanting story of Anidori-Kiladra, Crown Princess of Kildenree. Blindsided by her family, Ani is betrothed to a faraway prince and must make a journey through the forest to the kingdom of Bayern. Along the way, her conniving lady-in-waiting ambushes the royal entourage and Ani is left for dead while Selia steals her identity as the new queen of Bayern. Ani must now rely on the help of the forest people and working classes of the kingdom to sneak in and try to claim her rightful place. Beautifully written with rich details and emotional depth, Shannon Hale proves herself to be an expert storyteller. The adventures continue in the Books of Bayern and for an extra special treat, try the audio book which is presented with a full dramatic cast. Check out other magically written fairy tale stories by Shannon Hale such as The Princess Academy. Author Gail Carson Levine also offers many versions of fairy tales and my favorite, Beastly by Alex Flinn, is a retelling of beauty and the beast.

I loved this story! I listened to the CD Book and full-cast reading was enthralling and I was sorry when the story was over. Ani grew so much as person from her meek little princess days; I was practically cheering her on.
