Kentucky police officer Rick Grimes is shot in the line of duty and wakes from a coma in an abandoned hospital to a world that is unrecognizable -- one overrun by zombies. There is no government, no military, and no society. Hoping that his wife and son have made their way to Atlanta seeking safe shelter when the apocalypse occurred, Rick gathers up some ammo and supplies and heads towards the city, encountering both the living and the living dead along the way.

This is just the beginning of an epic journey for Rick. It's a journey filled with horror and hope, betrayal and redemption in a brutal world where the remaining humans are as dangerous as the zombies who shuffle and moan their way through their new domain. Kirkman's zombies are slow and stumbling, the zombies of Romero, with no other purpose than to feed a hunger that can never be sated. The humans, however, are much more frightening.

Be warned. These graphic novels are horrific and indeed graphic, but they are also strongly character driven, making this series more than just gratuitous violence and gore. Throughout the series, the true nature of humans is explored to every extreme. In a world ruled by the dead, we are forced finally to begin living.

I love the AMC show so much. This is definitely on my to-read list.
