18-year-old Celaena Sardothien was the greatest assassin in all of Adarlan. Unfortunately, she got caught and has spent the last year working in the salt mines in one of the country's most notorious prison camps. When the crown prince shows up unexpectedly with an offer of freedom, Celaena jumps at the chance. But first she must defeat other assassins and soldiers from across the kingdom to become that king's champion. As the competition gets underway, other competitors start dying in strange ways. Celaena fears that dark things are happening in the castle and she may be the next victim.

As if that wasn't enough to deal with, Celaena finds her heart torn between the crown prince and the brooding captain of the guard, who has been assigned to train her. Can Celaena win the competition and secure her freedom? Will her heart bind her to the castle even if the guards no longer do?

Throne of Glass is an engaging read that I didn't want to put down. While the book touches on Celaena's back story and why she is conflicted about the competition she has entered, I'm hoping that the planned sequel will delve further into her life before we met her.
